Adam's Bridge, Indian Ocean

by misterywisemisterywise 04 Mar 2013 12:25

Adam's Bridge (Tamil language: ஆதாம் பாலம்''ātām pālam''), also known as ''Rama's Bridge'' or ''Rama Setu'' (Tamil language: இராமர் பாலம்''Irāmar pālam'', Sanskrit: रामसेत''rāmasetu'')[Bibliography item 1 not found.], is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Geological evidence suggests that this bridge is a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.[Bibliography item 2 not found.]

Altun Ha

by misterywisemisterywise 04 Mar 2013 11:42

Altun Ha is the name given ruins of an ancient Maya city in Belize, located in the Belize District about 30 miles (50 km) north of Belize City and about 6 miles (10 km) west of the shore of the Caribbean Sea. The site covers an area of about 5 miles (8 km) square. The ruins of the ancient structures had their stones reused for residential construction of the agricultural village of Rockstone Pond in modern times, but the ancient site did not come to the attention of archeologists until 1963. The Old Northern Highway connects Altun Ha to Belize's Northern Highway, and the site is accessible for tourism. The largest of Altun Ha's temple-pyramids, the "Temple of the Masonry Altars", is 54 feet (16 m) high. A drawing of this structure is the logo of Belize's leading brand of beer, "Belikin".

Antikythera Mechanism

by misterywisemisterywise 06 Mar 2013 07:25

The Antikythera mechanism (pron.: /ˌæntɨkɨˈθɪərə/ ant-i-ki-theer-ə or /ˌæntɨˈkɪθərə/ ant-i-kith-ə-rə) is an ancient analog computer[Bibliography item 1 not found.][Bibliography item 2 not found.] designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera wreck[Bibliography item 3 not found.], but its significance and complexity were not understood until a century later. Jacques Cousteau visited the wreck in 1978[Bibliography item 4 not found.] but, although he found new dating evidence, he did not find any additional remains of the Antikythera mechanism. The construction has been dated to the early 1st century BC. Technological artifacts approaching its complexity and workmanship did not appear again until the 14th century AD, when mechanical astronomical clocks began to be built in Western Europe.[Bibliography item 5 not found.]

Area 51

by misterywisemisterywise 06 Mar 2013 06:29

Area 51 (also known as Dreamland, or Groom Lake) is a remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base. It is located in the southern portion of Nevada in the western United States, 83 miles (133 km) north-northwest of Las Vegas. Situated at its center, on the southern shore of Groom Lake, is a large military airfield. The base's current primary purpose is officially undetermined; however, based on historical evidence, it most likely supports development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems.[Bibliography item 1 not found.][Bibliography item 2 not found.] Despite the obscurity of the facility, the base has become well known, in large part because of various conspiracy theories involving it and its frequent portrayal in popular culture.

Atlantis (in Greek, Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος), "island of Atlas" is a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues ''Timaeus'' and ''Critias'', written about 360 BC. According to Plato, Atlantis was a naval power lying "in front of the Pillars of Hercules" that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9600 BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune".

Baalbek Megaliths

by misterywisemisterywise 04 Mar 2013 12:09

Baalbek, also known as ''Baalbeck'' (Arabic: بعلبك‎ / ALA-LC: Baʻalbak, Lebanese pronunciation: ˈbʕalbak) is a town in the Beqaa Valley of Lebanon situated east of the Litani River. Known as ''Heliopolis'' (Ἡλιούπολις) during the period of Roman rule, it was one of the largest sanctuaries in the empire and contains some of the best preserved Roman ruins in Lebanon. The gods worshiped at the temple, the triad of Jupiter, Venus and Bacchus, were grafted onto the indigenous deities of Hadad, Atargatis and a young male god of fertility. Local influences are seen in the planning and layout of the temples, which vary from the classic Roman design.

Dendera Lamps

by misterywisemisterywise 20 Mar 2013 08:13

The Dendera light is a technology of electrical lighting supposedly in existence in ancient Egypt, proposed by some fringe authors. Proponents argue that the technology is depicted in the Hathor temple at the Dendera Temple complex located in Egypt on three stone reliefs (one single and a double representation), which resemble some modern electrical lighting systems. Egyptologists reject the theory and explain the reliefs as a typical set of symbolic images from Egyptian mythology.
